Why is Omega-3 so important for a healthy brain, heart and eyes?

Long-chain Omega-3 fatty acids (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) are essential nutrients for the body and are especially vital for normal brain, eye and heart function.

A great deal of research has been done to show how they help reduce the risk of heart disease, improve brain function and development, and also help protect eyes from macular degeneration and dry eye syndrome.

While DHA is considered the most complex form of omega-3, it is among the most difficult to consume in sufficient amounts because it’s contained in so few food sources. Omega-3 deficits can lead to a variety of imbalanced and unpleasant symptoms.

Heart

While heart attacks and strokes are the world’s leading causes of death, fish-eating communities have been found to have very low rates of these diseases due to their omega-3 consumption.

Omega-3 decreases triglycerides which lowers blood pressure slightly, reduces the risk of blood clotting and stroke and heart failure and reduces an irregular heartbeat.

Brain

DHA is the primary structural fatty acid of the grey matter of the brain – the tissue that processes information, memories and emotions – and the retina.

In nerve cells, Omega-3 improves communication between neurones with a beneficial effect on mood and also contributes to a healthy vision. Omega-3 can help to act against age-related mental decline neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Eyes

DHA is a major structural component of your eye retina, so a deficit can cause problems with your sight, such as macular degeneration: the most common form of blindness in older people.

A diet rich in DHA may help slow the degeneration of the retina and relieve dry eye and chronic inflammation of the eyelids.

How to help keep your brain, heart and eyes healthy?

Omega-3 is an essential fatty acid that our bodies are unable to make so it has to be obtained by taking supplements and through diet. For example, by eating green leafy vegetables, salmon, tuna, and other oily fish, nuts, eggs and citrus fruit. Choosing healthy foods also gives your body energy and helps fight disease.

Although many people associate Omega-3 supplements with fish oils, Schizochytrium microalgae is a potent alternative. This natural and sustainable source of stable Omega 3 fatty acids is also fish-free and suitable for vegetarian and vegans. Aim for 150 minutes of moderate-intensity activity each week to maintain overall cardiovascular health. As well as keeping an eye on blood pressure and cholesterol, it’s important to manage your blood sugar levels to prevent type II diabetes which does damage to the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves. Try to maintain a healthy weight: shedding those few unwanted pounds reduces the burden on your heart, lungs, blood vessels and skeleton. And, of course, quit smoking.
